3 Tips to Help Actors Deal with Audition Desperation

Have you ever gone through a period of audition desperation? When this happens, it can feel like every meeting with casting is extremely high stakes, and there’s a lot of pressure to book the job.

I’m sure every actor has dealt with this emotion at some point. And by the way, it’s completely normal. Getting an audition is exciting because it is an opportunity to act, and it’s especially exciting when that opportunity could mean getting closer to your dream.

But when the feeling of desperation overpowers everything else, it can be strangulating and take away the joy of the experience.

Let’s explore three simple and effective steps you can take to really kick desperation out the door and start enjoying your auditions again.

1. Audition more often. Most actors have experienced the natural ebb and flow of the audition process. Some months you’re running around like crazy to get everything done, and other months it seems like the auditions are few and far between. When an audition does pop up during the “lean” months, there can be a lot of pressure to book the job.

Prepare for this situation by creating a plan to audition more often—even just by doing mock auditions. This could be by putting yourself on tape every Thursday afternoon, or doing commercial drop-ins. Think of innovative and fun ways you can mimic the audition process to take the pressure off.

2. Find your cause. Come up a cause that’s bigger than your audition experience. A cause is a motivation that trumps any fears, dreams or needs that may arise around the process. Why are you an actor in the first place? What change do you wish to ignite through your acting?

When you walk into an audition with this intention, it will change the way you relate to the experience. Suddenly you’re in the audition room to empower young girls through your work, or you’re there to have fun, or to bring laughter to everyone with whom you interact, and it’s not about you any more.

3. Try the Emotional Freedom Technique. If you’re still anxious, try EFT, the Emotional Freedom Technique otherwise known as Tapping. This is something you can do for yourself (without a practitioner) and it’s designed to help you access acupressure points on your body. EFT will help you feel into the anxiety or fear around the audition. By sitting with the negative emotions, you’ll find that the apprehension will dissipate.

This is a very powerful tool that you can learn about for free. Type “EFT” into Google or Youtube and you’ll find plenty of information.

Finally, if you’re dealing with audition desperation, keep in mind that it won’t last forever. Take care of yourself by allowing yourself to feel the emotions that come up and continue to move forward despite them.
