8 Ways Performers Can Make a Healthy Transition from Summer to Fall

With summer comes longer days, boosts of vitamin D, increased energy and likely a surge of motivation and productivity. As performers, we may take advantage of the longer days and push ourselves to beyond our normal limits when it comes to advancing our careers. However, as fall arrives, it is important to momentarily slow down, take a breath and prepare for the new season. Staying cognizant of our health is paramount to continuing our hectic city lives or vigorous days of training, side hustles, and rehearsals. As flu season approaches and changes in weather affect our bodies, we must do our part to stay strong and resilient so that we don’t skip a beat when it comes to our artistic endeavors. With this guide, you won’t have to worry about missing out on that audition you’ve been prepping six months for. Here are some tips on how to keep your body and mind sound as we transition from summer to fall.

Take time to rest: We can’t stress this enough. Autumn and winter are great times to slow down. If you’ve been burning the candle at both ends lately, it’s extremely important to listen to your body and rest when you feel the need to do so. Enjoy taking a day off from your creative hustle every now and again and focus on self-care. You’ll be glad you did it!

Plan around shorter days: With Daylight Savings Time coming, we will need to adjust to the days feeling much shorter as the sun sets sooner. Enjoy the periods of darkness and luxuriate in going to bed earlier. You’ll be refreshed and energized for your stimulating days!

Buy food that’s in season: Fall is the season of warm and grounding foods. According to Ayurveda, a holistic system of medicine originating in India, it is especially important to incorporate warm and cooked foods like soups and porridges, as opposed to cold and raw foods such as salads. Foods to prioritize include sweet potatoes, butternut squash, pumpkin, root vegetables, hearty grains, beets, dark leafy greens, and nuts, as well as spices such as turmeric, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, and cardamom. Bon appetit!

Boost your immunity: If you’re doing the above, you’re already on your way. In addition to eating healthy foods and incorporating a variety of vegetables into your diet, it’s also imperative to stay hydrated. If you’re a coffee lover and tend to have more of it during the cold months, make sure you are drinking plenty of water to balance things out. Washing your hands frequently and especially before eating will help you avoid catching any sicknesses going around.

Don’t let yourself slip out of your routine: When the weather gets cold it’s entirely too tempting to stay in bed and skip that audition or workshop you had signed up for weeks ago. Resist! You’ll always feel better that you stuck to your schedule and made the effort to continue to develop your craft. If you’re still having trouble, try making a morning routine that motivates you. It may look something like: brewing your favorite tea, sitting in meditation for ten minutes, and reading one chapter of a biography on a brilliant artist you admire. You know yourself best and what you need to get the ball rolling!

Prepare for dropping temperatures: Whether you're a dancer, singer, or any other type of performer, you must take care of your body as it is, of course, your instrument. Rehearsal studios do not always maintain a comfortable temperature as we transition from warm to cooler weather, so be sure to always pack or dress in layers! For singers, you may want to pack a warm soothing tea in a to-go thermos, and dancers may want to pack extra warm-ups to prevent pulling muscles and avoid injury.

Start fresh with minimalism: Let’s be honest, spring cleaning isn’t only for spring. It’s incredible how a purge of items that no longer serve us or have been sitting in our closet for a decade can affect our state of mind. After a good clean out, don’t be surprised if you feel a resurgence of energy, motivation, and clarity. When you physically have less to deal with it will free up mental space to help you focus on your passions. Minimalism encourages self-awareness and allows you to finally see what actually brings you joy.  Wouldn’t it be nice to waste less time getting dressed in the morning and always be on time to your class, rehearsal or audition?  Try it out for yourself and experience the magic!

Check in with yourself: At this point in the year, it is always beneficial to check in with yourself in terms of your physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual states of being. How is your energy and physical health? Where have you lost momentum in regards to your goals? What needs attention right now? How can you implement more self-care? There are still three months left of the year to check off those to-do list items, reward yourself for what you have accomplished thus far, and prepare yourself for exciting new challenges and opportunities.
