From the spirited ditties in “Newsies” to the silly tongue twisters in “Seussical,”  there are countless songs available for kids and teens to choose from for an audition. Here’s a sampling of songs targeted at boys under 12 years old that will not only showcase your child actor’s voice, but allow them to tell a story.

“A Letter From Charlie Bucket” from “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” (ballad)

This song is a fun yet moving choice for young performers who can balance both subtle humor and (literal) sweetness.

“Bigger Isn’t Better” from “Barnum” (uptempo)

Playful lyrics and an accessible melody make this highflyer especially suitable for small humans to show off their big personalities.

“Happiness” from “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown” (ballad)

A sweet ballad with a simple message and gentle melody, this song lets aspiring Broadway stars demonstrate both vocal control and genuine sincerity.

“If Only You Would Listen” from “School of Rock” (uptempo)

Let youthful indignation ring! The line, “And I’m gonna make you hear me,” can be especially fitting and fun for auditions.

“In the Big Blue World” from “Finding Nemo” (uptempo)

Young actors can highlight their range by singing both parts of this conversational song between the young clownfish and his father.

“It’s Possible” from “Seussical” (uptempo)

Use this fantastic (and fantastical) option to demonstrate a firm grasp of diction—going from “pool” to “books” to “brooks” is no easy feat!

“I Won’t Grow Up” from “Peter Pan” (uptempo)

This uptempo number is infused with gleeful defiance (particularly the “I’ll never grow up” refrain), making it an amusing, lively choice for boys.

“King of New York” from “Newsies” (uptempo)

For young performers with both swagger and heart, this song’s bouncy, conversational style gives room to play with characterization without requiring intense vocal acrobatics.

“World’s Greatest Dad” from “Elf the Musical” (ballad)

Although Buddy may not be a literal child, boys can lean into the sort-of-elf’s sense of childlike wonder and desire for paternal connection.

“Stay Gold” from “The Outsiders” (ballad)

This powerfully tender tearjerker from the new musical adaptation of the classic novel (and film!) is a golden choice for young actors auditioning for a more mature role.

“What If” from “The Addams Family” (ballad)

Who wouldn’t want to play Pugsley Addams? The recent West End concert and “Wednesday” TV show have revitalized interest in the iconic musical, making this number both timely and timeless.

“When I Grow Up” from “Matilda the Musical” (ballad)

An emotional song about the vulnerability of youth, this is an excellent option for young singers with strong vocal control.
