London-based actor Rosie Yates knows the unique value her work as a creative brings to the industry.
Your talent is always needed.
“The industry needs you as much as you need it. Without young and unique creatives, the industry remains static and repetitive. Don’t ever forget that what you have to offer is different from what anyone else does, and let that give you confidence in both your auditions and your work.”
Be forthcoming with your admiration.
“Write to people. Be a champion of your friends and co-workers in the industry. It’s a myth that there isn’t enough room for us all, and you’ve got nothing to lose by letting people know you’d love to work with them. Be consistent in your work and treat these people as people—don’t just see them as opportunities.”
Trust your instincts.
“There isn’t a ‘right’ or ‘perfect’ way of interpreting a script. The best, most interesting thing you can do is to make big, bold choices based on who you are and how you envision the world of the script.”
Opportunity is waiting right around the corner.
“Be ready for opportunity when it comes your way. Luck is just the meeting of opportunity and readiness, so keep working on your skills, feed your creativity, and always have something acting-related on the horizon, even if it’s just a play reading with your friends. An opportunity will come along, and you want to be ready for it when it does.”
Each audition is part of a journey on its own.
“I once had a casting director tell me to take a moment with each script to think about all the hands it had to pass through before getting to yours. It is so hard to get anything made in this industry, so no matter what, it is a miracle that the script is now in your hands. It’s likely taken several years to get there, seen hundreds of edits, passed through several studios or directors and now, finally, it is in your hands and you get to help bring someone’s hard work to fruition with your own.”
