Even though she’s a beloved actor who has won an Academy Award, Golden Globe, Emmy Award, and SAG Award, it hasn’t always been a cakewalk through the biz for Anne Hathaway. A a matter of fact, she’s had to fight (hard!) to land many of her roles, including the one that might be her most iconic: forlorn assistant Andy Sachs in “The Devil Wears Prada.”
On a recent episode of “Rupaul’s Drag Race,” contestant Rosé had to audition for her fellow participants to play the role of Foxy in “Social Media the Unverified Rusical.” So, when Hathaway paid a visit to the cast (over Zoom, of course), Rosé took the opportunity to ask whether there have been roles she has had to “fight tooth and nail for.”
Hathaway, charming as she is, responded with a smile and asked, “How much time do you have?” She explained that persistence has been key throughout her career. In fact, for “The Devil Wears Prada,” she revealed that she was not actually the team’s first choice for the role—she wasn’t the second, third, or fourth choice, either. Hathaway was the ninth choice for the part!
The lesson here, Hathaway insisted, is simple: Just keep going, girls (and boys). Snapping her fingers, bouncing in her chair, and bearing that huge grin, she told the queens, “But I got it! Hang in there! Never give up!” Because regardless of her spot in line, she got the gig and then continued on her path, just as she would have done if the role had gone to choices 1–7.
