Asher Angel is set to play Billy Bastion, the young alter-ego of superhero Captain Marvel, in New Line’s DC comics property “Shazam!” Angel, known for starring in the Disney Channel’s “Andi Mack,” will appear alongside Zachary Levi, who has already signed on as Captain Marvel. Grace Fulton is rumored to be attached to the picture in a starring role, and Mark Strong is also rumored to be in talks to play Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, the story’s villain.

The film follows the adventures of Billy Bastion and his discovery of the magic word Shazam! (an acronym for Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury) that transforms him into the mighty Captain Marvel. The project is part of the developing DC cinematic universe and is among a slate of films in development at New Line. Black Adam, the dark counterpart of Captain Marvel in the original comic, is receiving his own stand-alone film with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the arch-villain, suggesting that “Shazam!” is the beginning of a long-running franchise.

“Shazam!” will be the next DC properties project to begin filming, and production is expected to take place in Toronto, Canada. The creative team includes director David F. Sandberg, producer Peter Safran, and Henry Gayden and Darren Lemke co-writing the screenplay. Some principal casting is done, but CD Rich Delia, who worked with Sandberg on “Annabelle: Creation.” continues to fill what are likely lead roles, and additional supporting roles that have not been announced. Now’s the time to get your foot in the door as the franchise continues to grow!
