“Fences,” August Wilson’s 1983 Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece, has finally found its way to the big screen thanks to actor-director Denzel Washington and Paramount Pictures. The playwright’s screenplay adaptation of the Maxsons, a working-class black family making ends meet in 1950s Pittsburgh, is now resonating with film audiences—and awards season voters—across the country. Check out this exclusive clip for a glimpse:

Washington stars as Troy Maxson, patriarch and tragic hero of Wilson’s drama, alongside Viola Davis as his loyal wife Rose. Both are now in contention for acting honors at this year’s SAG Awards; the actors were also nominated for Golden Globes, with Davis taking home the award for best actress in a supporting role. Also in supporting roles are Stephen McKinley Henderson as Bono, Mykelti Williamson as Gabriel, and Russell Hornsby as Lyons. Joining this rock-solid ensemble are Jovan Adepo as Troy and Rose’s son Cory, as well as the young Saniyya Sidney.

Thanks to the talents of its astonishing cast, “Fences” is ending up on the shortlists of awards season voters everywhere. Taken individually, the film’s performances offer superb examples of precision and fearlessness on camera; together, these actors demonstrate what makes an ensemble great.
