Brandon Salerno is a New York City–based actor who is set to star in the new web series “Big Law.” Salerno found this job, among many others, through Backstage. Here’s how!

Auditions are acting experience, too.
“Audition, audition, audition. Submit for as many projects as possible that you think would be a good fit for you. The more you audition, the better prepared you will be for future auditions.”

For new actors: Start local.
“For actors who are just starting out in TV and film, student films are a great way to gain experience and footage, [and] Backstage has many postings for these opportunities. Looking to local NYC colleges and film programs is a great way to get connected in the market.”

Connecting with others leads to more work.
“I met [director Jack Tracy] when I auditioned for Season 2 of his award-winning series ‘History.’ I was cast as a small cameo role, kept in touch with Jack, and then was asked to be the lead role in ‘Big Law,’ his newest series.”

It’s OK to play to your strengths.
“I love playing the quirky, nerdy type in comedies. I almost always submit for those roles. I’m focusing a lot right now on TV/film/commercials, and Backstage has a lot to offer in these areas.”

Find joy in your work.
“The cast and crew [on ‘Big Law’] were amazing to work with, and we had so many fun moments. It was great to meet actors I had never worked with before and reunite on set with others from past projects. I can’t wait to see how the series turns out!”
