Wondering what’s involved? Find out more about contributing below in our answers to some frequently asked questions about Experts.

How often do I have to write?
How regularly you want to contribute is up to you! You can write monthly, bi-monthly, or every few months. We ask everyone to pitch ideas before writing anything and there is no guarantee that submitted pieces will be published until we review them. We send out a monthly email to everyone with updates and topics we’re looking for Experts to write about.

How long do my articles have to be?
These columns are usually around 600-900 words.

Are there any benefits to becoming an Expert?
Yes! We create an author page for you with a bio, headshot, and links to your websites. Backstage also promotes Expert articles through channels like newsletters and social media, where we have 1.1 million likes on Facebook, 320K followers on Instagram, and 138K followers on Twitter. Your article will also be featured on our homepage upon publication.

Have a book coming out? We’re happy to discuss publishing a book excerpt for our readers. Plus, we’re open to sharing news of a book or project release and other professional work achievements on our social media after we’ve reviewed them.

Can I publish my work somewhere else after it appears on Backstage?
You can publish your articles on your own website or blog after they appear on Backstage as long as you include a link back to the original article on our website.

Can I submit my own photos to be published with articles?
No, we have our own photo sources that we use.

Can I write for the print magazine?
Experts are occasionally able to write articles that will appear in the print magazine, especially for our Ask an Expert series.
