New York is the city that never sleeps, and with so many events and activities each week across all five boroughs, it can be hard to know what’s actually worthwhile. Here are the events New York City actors should have on their radars this week.
Celebrate the wizard of “Wicked.”
Stephen Schwartz, esteemed composer behind “Pippin,” “Godspell,” and most famously, “Wicked,” will celebrate his 70th birthday with an all-star lineup of theater stalwarts. The Dramatists Guild Foundation will fete the talent at Broadway’s Hudson Theatre on April 23, with a concert featuring performances from Ben Platt, Rachel Bay Jones, Laura Benanti, Darren Criss, Judith Light, and others. The evening will also be the first in the DGF: Toasts series, honoring the life and work of American theater’s greatest writers. (Tickets start at $55)
Don’t miss the Bard’s birthday.
Beginning April 23, which happens to be the birthday of William Shakespeare, The Mobile Unit’s staging of “Henry V” will begin its run at the Public Theater—completely free of cost. Ongoing through May 13, the production features Zenzi Williams as the titular Henry, alongside Patrice Johnson, Ariel Shafir, Kim Wong, Joe Tapper, and others, with direction by Robert O’Hara. (Free)
Morgan movie nights are back.
Movie Nights at the Morgan returns to the Morgan Library & Museum on April 20, kicking off a slate of film screenings and conversations covering a variety of genres and subject matter. Ongoing through May 3, events will include a showing of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” and a conversation between Tony winner Patti LuPone and author Colum McCann. (Tickets start at $15)
SAG-AFTRA will get you contractually educated.
SAG-AFTRA wants to make sure you know what you’re getting into before signing your being over to a contract. On April 26, the union will present “Come Learn All You Need to Know About Talent Agency Contracts Before You Sign on the Dotted Line,” a long-winded but hopefully explanatory title. The educational seminar, held at the Ken Howard Boardroom, will also provide on-hand staff to answer any questions you may have about contracts. RSVP is mandatory for attendance. (Free)
They’ll tell their stories.
“Staging Our Stories,” a panel discussion featuring marginalized voices working in theater, will be co-presented by the Immigrant Arts Coalition, Dramatists Guild of America, and National Yiddish Folksbiene Theatre on April 20. Featuring Martyna Majok, winner of the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, as well as “Come From Away” creators Irene Sankoff and David Hein, the (free!) event will be held at the Dramatist Guild of America’s Mary Rodgers Room. (Free)
