Broadway's Best Performers Go to the Dogs

For one day only, at the upcoming "Broadway Barks!" benefit, the best performers on Broadway will be joined by a chorus of barks, yowls, yips, woofs, and meows.

Angela Lansbury, David Hyde Pierce, and Mary Louise Wilson will be among the many dramatic and musical theatre performers to join the dogs and cats in need of adoption at the ninth annual event.

Mary Tyler Moore is scheduled to co-host the event with Bernadette Peters, a seven-time Tony Award nominee and veteran of the stage and screen, who adopted her two dogs, Kramer and Stella, from the ASPCA and the Center for Animal Care and Control.

Other celebrities who will be on hand to present animals for adoption include Audra McDonald (110 in the Shade), Michael Cerveris (LoveMusik), and Christine Ebersole (Grey Gardens).

In 2005, more than 6,000 fans and animal lovers attended the event. The program's producer, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, and its sponsors have made it a mission to find permanent homes for the thousands of homeless dogs and cats in the metropolitan area.

The event will also feature an auction of celebrity-autographed memorabilia. All proceeds will benefit New York City animal shelters and adoption agencies.

"Broadway Barks!" will be held July 14, at 3:30 in Shubert Alley, between 44th and 45th streets and Broadway and Eighth Avenue. (A rain date is set for July 28.)
