Cannes Updates, What’s Coming to the West End + More News

It seems like all anyone wants to talk about this week is Cannes, and the alleged hubbub Netflix has created by not releasing their films in French theatres. Their Bong Joon-ho–directed “Okja” was amongst the films that were booed during a screening and had to be stopped. Festival jury members—which this year include Will Smith—have been arguing about whether Netflix should be allowed nominations if it doesn’t release films in France.

The rumour mill is also whirring about big upcoming projects and casting. Highlights include Daniel Radcliffe starring in the prison drama “Escape From Pretoria,” based on the life of Tim Jenkin and due to film in South Africa in early 2018. Tom Hardy is set to play a decorated U.S. Navy Seal in a new film from director Andrew Dominik (“Chopper”) and producer Ridley Scott. Sasha Lane (“American Honey”) joins Alicia Vikander and Armie Hammer for Ben Wheatley’s “Freak Shift,” filming later this year.

In terms of theatre, here are some highlights of what’s coming to London this year. Keep your eyes peeled for castings and understudy announcements.

“The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole Aged 13 3/4” is coming to the Menier Chocolate Factory in July and runs until September. Directed by Luke Sheppard (“In the Heights,” “Southwark Playhouse”), the musical adaptation of Sue Townsend’s bestselling book about a boy from Leicester whose number one enemy is Margaret Thatcher premiered at Leicester Curve last year.

The Mentor” by Daniel Kehlmann is transferring from the Theatre Royal Bath to the Vaudeville Theatre from 24 June to 2 September. Starring Oscar winner F Murray Abraham, it also features Daniel Weyman, Naomi Frederick, and Jonathan Cullen.

Also this summer is the Camden Fringe. Be on the lookout as productions have begun casting including “Bullet Hole”. And “5,6,7,8”, a new musical by Shaun Kitchener (“Hollyoaks”, “Positive”) about a 90s pop group is looking for musical theatre actors.

Stockard Channing is set to star in a new West End production of Alexi Kaye-Campbell’s play “Apologia”, which originally opened at the Bush in 2008. Directed by Jamie Lloyd, the production runs from the 29 July to the 18 November at Trafalgar Studios.
