CASTING ALERT: Productions of ‘Hairspray,’ ‘The Bodyguard’ + ‘Next to Normal’ Need Kids and Teens

Find an outlet for your child performer today! Five stage shows across the country are casting roles for young talent. Plus, a new unscripted series needs kids to share their opinions.

“HAIRSPRAY”
“Hairspray,” set in Baltimore in the 1960s, tells of a story of love and community, promoting acceptance for different bodies and ethnicities. A production of the show is casting young African American female talent, aged 10–15, to play Little Inez, a talented dancer. Rehearsals begin April 2 for nonunion talent and April 9 for union talent. Auditions are by appointment on Feb. 26 in Los Angeles and Feb. 28 and March 2 in Rancho Palos Verdes, California. All rehearsal and performances will take place in Rolling Hills Estates, California. Equity talent will be paid $585 per week under the terms of an Equity Guest Artist Tier III Contract. “THE BODYGUARD”
The musical “The Bodyguard,” follows the story of the hit film, starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, of a bodyguard tasked with protecting a superstar singer from an unknown stalker. A regional premiere production is casting African American male talent, aged 8–12, with strong singing skills, to play Fletcher, the son of Rachel, the principal role. Auditions are by appointment on Feb. 27 and March 1 in NYC and March 4 in White Plains, New York. Rehearsal and performances run from April 8–May 12 in White Plains. Equity talent will be paid $455 per week plus pension and health under the terms of a LORT-LOA Contract. “NEXT TO NORMAL”
A production of the musical, “Next to Normal” needs young Equity talent. The production is casting two roles for teen talent, Natalie, a troubled yet hardworking and accomplished pianist, for female talent, aged 16, and Henry, Natalie’s classmate, a philosopher, musician, and slacker, for male talent, aged 17.  An Equity Principal Audition is scheduled for Feb. 25 in New York City. The show rehearses and runs from April 29–June 2 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Talent will be paid $556.80 under the terms of an Equity Non-Rep LORT Experimental Contract. Apply here!

“KID CRITIC”
An unscripted series, “Kid Critic,” is casting young talent. The show has kids acting as critics, trying out, for example, expensive “adult” cuisine next to cheaper food, and seeing which they prefer. Sometimes the show will test other products as well, like health and beauty products. Three to five products will be featured per episode with two kid “critics.” The series is casting male and female talent, aged 6–8, with vibrant personalities, that is comfortable talking on camera with someone their own age. UNTITLED NEW MUSICAL
An untitled new musical going into production at New York Theatre Workshop is casting. The show is filling six roles for male talent, aged 16, with instrumental skills on guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar, piano, and drums. An Equity Principal Audition is scheduled for Feb. 25. A reading of the play will run from April 29–May 11 or May 2–14 in New York City. Talent will be paid $500 per week under the terms of an Equity Off Broadway Staged Reading Agreement. Apply here!

“REX AND BOB’S EXCELLENT MISADVENTURE”
A production of the musical “Rex and Bob’s Excellent Misadventure” is filling six roles. The show is a mash-up of two famous musicals, with Professor Henry Higgins and Harold Hill trading places in each other’s stories. The role of Wingstop Laroo is for a male actor, aged 7–11, and four male actors, aged 7–17, with the ability to harmonize, are being cast for a special feature; instrumental skills are a plus. The role of Zanetta Flynn is for female talent, aged 12–17. The showing is seeking union and nonunion talent. Auditions are by appointment on Feb. 25 and 27.
