Darren Aronofsky’s film adaptation of the biblical story of Noah will be cast by Mary Vernieu and Lindsay Graham at Betty Mae Casting, Back Stage has learned. The plot should be well-known to all, but just in case: A man receives instructions from God to build a ship and populate it with a pair of each animal species in advance of a worldwide flood.

The subject matter might strike some as an odd choice for the director of such dark fare as “Black Swan” and “Requiem for a Dream,” but “Noah” has been often been referred to as Aronofsky’s “dream project” in media reports. Considering his sensibilities and the sensitive material, it’s hard to imagine this project not igniting controversy at some point.

Shooting is scheduled to get under way in Iceland in July. Russell Crowe has already signed on to play the famous shipwright.
