New York is the city that never sleeps, and with so many events and activities each week across all five boroughs, it can be hard to know what’s actually worthwhile. Here are the events New York City actors should have on their radars this week.
Celebrate among Broadway’s best.
TodayTix, the theater ticketing app, is celebrating its fifth birthday and you—along with a slew of Broadway stars—are invited to celebrate. Head to National Sawdust in Williamsburg on Sept. 24 for a one-night-only concert hosted by recent Emmy Award winner Darren Criss. Performers will include Ariana DeBose, Lesli Margherita, Matthew Morrison, Krysta Rodriguez, Ethan Slater, and several others, with all proceeds going towards the Dramatist Guild Foundation’s New Voices program. (Tickets start at $55)
Tribeca does TV.
For the second year, Tribeca TV Festival is bringing television’s biggest fans together to celebrate the many voices that have contributed to the small screen’s golden age thus far. The four-day event, running now through Sept. 23 at Spring Studios, will feature talks and panels with the likes of Meryl Streep, Bryan Cranston, Tracey Ullman, Mariska Hargitay, Liev Schreiber, Laverne Cox, and countless others. Some events have already sold out, however, there will be a “rush” system in place beginning at the venue 45 minutes prior to the given event. Tickets to many events are still available—head to the website to learn more. (Tickets $20–$40)
¡Viva Broadway!
The Broadway League will celebrate this year’s Hispanic Heritage Month with Viva Broadway’s free outdoor concert on Sept. 25. Taking place in Duffy Square (46th Street and Broadway), the event will feature performances by Broadway stalwarts including Ana Villafañe, Mandy Gonzalez, and others. National Viva Broadway Ambassador Bianca Marroquin hosts the evening, which kicks off at 5 p.m.
Don’t rain on his parade.
If ever there were a cause for celebration, it’s Barbra Streisand. In honor of Babs and the 50th anniversary of her “Funny Girl,” head to the Green Room 42 on Sept. 22 for “Simply Barbra.” The concert, written and performed by Steven Bringber, is updated annually and features all of the songs most closely associated with the titular icon. (Tickets start at $20)
Spend an afternoon with playwrights on Park Avenue.
Playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, the artist in residence at Park Avenue Armory, is slated to host an afternoon salon on Sept. 23. Held at the Armory, the lineup of readings, discussions, performances, and more will include events with Suzan Lori-Parks, Lynn Nottage, Jocelyn Bioh, and Aleshea Harris, among others. (Tickets $25)
