Date for Jeanne Bates Memorial Set

Theatre West in Hollywood will host a memorial honoring longtime company member Jeanne Bates on Feb. 3 at 10:30 a.m. Bates died of breast cancer at the Motion Picture and Television Fund Hospital in Woodland Hills, Calif., Nov. 28. She was 89.

The actor started out in radio, becoming the lead in the series Whodunit in 1940. She broke into films in 1943, starring in the mystery The Chance of a Lifetime and as the love interest in The Phantom.

Bates, who appeared in some three dozen motion pictures, made notable late-career appearances in Die Hard 2 (1990) and Mulholland Dr. (2001) for director David Lynch, for whom she also played Mrs. X in the cult classic Eraserhead (1977).

She was most recognizable to TV audiences for her role as Miss Wills, the no-nonsense but compassionate head nurse of a neurosurgical ward, on the 1960s medical show Ben Casey. She subsequently portrayed continuing characters on Days of Our Lives and The Young and the Restless.
