While it’s important to learn from the careers of some of today’s brightest Broadway stars, Backstage Expert and casting director Benton Whitley (Stewart/Whitley Casting) advises actors to avoid emulating them in the audition room. That means you shouldn’t sing from the famed songbooks of “Idina Menzel, Gavin Creel, or Sutton Foster,” among other “idolized” voices in contemporary musical theater. Remember, if the casting director knows the song too well, they’ll imagine the person who made it famous singing it instead of paying attention to you!
