Actors celebrated actors in a ceremony full of emotional highs and lows at the 2017 Screen Actors Guild Awards Jan. 29. As voted upon by SAG-AFTRA members across the country, the winners of the guild’s top honors represented some of the best talent film and TV had to offer in 2016.
Netflix emerged a big winner in both individual and ensemble TV categories. After 17 nominations, the streaming service took home four the Actor statues: outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series (“Stranger Things”), outstanding performance by an ensemble in a comedy series (“Orange Is the New Black”), outstanding performance by a female actor in a drama series (Claire Foy for “The Crown”), and outstanding performance by a male actor in a drama series (John Lithgow for “The Crown”).

Also emerging triumphant was “Fences,” which earned stars Denzel Washington and Viola Davis their first and fifth SAG wins, respectively. The Paramount Pictures film was nominated for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture, but fell to 20th Century Fox’s NASA drama “Hidden Figures.” A visibly shocked Taraji P. Henson accepted the award on behalf of the ensemble, thanking astronaut John Glenn and the three female mathematicians on whom the film is based: Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, and Katherine Johnson.
Emma Stone of Lionsgate’s “La La Land” accepted her third SAG award, for leading female actor, and Mahershala Ali of A24’s “Moonlight” won his first for supporting male actor. Bryan Cranston earned his fifth statue for the HBO TV movie “All the Way,” while Sarah Paulson of FX’s “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” took home her first. Rounding out the winners were William H. Macy for Showtime’s “Shameless,” his third SAG Award, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus for HBO’s “Veep”—her seventh.
Taking home this year’s Life Achievement Award was Lily Tomlin, introduced by her longtime friend and collaborator Dolly Parton. Tomlin used her speech to provide actors everywhere with some useful tips. “Now, after 50 years in the business, I find young actors are asking me for sage advice,” she said wryly. “So along with telling them to wear sunscreen, I suggest a few other things I think you may find helpful. Don’t leave the house when you’re drunk.... And don’t be anxious about missing an opportunity. Behind every failure is an opportunity someone wished they had missed.”

The ceremony also included a touching In Memoriam tribute honoring Garry Marshall, Gene Wilder, Mary Tyler Moore, Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds, and many more.
