Festival Date: Passed (mid-January)

Entry Deadline: August 2004 (early, for 2005 fest); October 2004 (late, for 2005 fest)

Founded in 1995, this maverick film festival "by filmmakers for filmmakers" takes place in the heart of Park City, Utah, to coincide with the Sundance Film Festival and has become a viable option for independent filmmakers to screen their works for many of the same people attending the larger, more dominant festival in town. As Slamdance has grown in stature, so has the number of submissions. While Sundance's roster of films increasingly includes established filmmakers and name actors, as well as distributors attached, Slamdance has remained entirely true to its very independent spirit. Its main feature competition (about a dozen) is devoted strictly to films without domestic theatrical distribution, with first-time feature directors, and with relatively low budgets. Besides fiction features, Slamdance also shows shorts, documentaries, and experimental films. It also holds a screenplay competition and an online shorts competition.

Founded in 1994, this festival began as an extension of the SXSW Music and Media Conference and quickly established itself as a formidable force in the indie film world. Divided into film, interactive, and music categories, these three industry events converge in Austin during a Texas-sized week. It lasts nine days and attracts the likes of Kevin Smith, Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, Richard Linklater, and John Sayles. Recent highlights have included the U.S. premiere of Code 46, directed by Michael Winterbottom; a screening of Bush's Brain, directed by Michael Paradies Shoob and Joseph Mealey; and a Political Films Retrospective.

Entry Deadline: late September 2004 (for 2005 fest)

Widely considered the premiere showcase of U.S. and international independent film, the Sundance Film Festival has its origins in the Utah/US Film Festival, which began in 1978 in Salt Lake City. In 1985, the festival became a program of the Sundance Institute. The festival attracts more than 38,000 visitors annually and is held every January in Park City, with screenings in Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance. The festival includes a range of film categories and related offerings that represent the broad scope of contemporary independent films being made in the U.S. and internationally. Each year, the festival screens more than 125 dramatic and documentary feature-length films and 90 short films, selected from more than 5,000 submissions.

In its 20-year history, the festival has helped usher a new and unconventional group of writers and directors to the forefront of filmmaking. The growing list of innovative films that have premiered at the festival includes American Splendor; Capturing the Friedmans; Pieces of April; In the Bedroom; The Good Girl; You Can Count on Me; Gods and Monsters; The Full Monty; Shine; Welcome to the Dollhous; American Movie; Smoke Signals; Central Station; Hoop Dreams; El Mariachi; Paris Is Burning; Longtime Companion; Sex, Lies and Videotape; and Blood Simple.

E-mail: mail@telluridefilmfestival.org

Festival Date: Sept. 3-6, 2004

Entry Deadline: May 1-July 15, 2004

If Sundance is the place where the industry does business, then Telluride is where you'll make lifelong friends. Founded in 1974, this noncompetitive four-day event brings the world's best films and genuine film fans to the remote mountain town of Telluride, Col. This festival is open to professional and nonprofessional filmmakers working in all film genres: documentary, narrative, animation, and experimental. Features and shorts of all styles and lengths are eligible for consideration provided they are new works and will remain unseen by the public until the current Labor Day weekend. For almost three decades, the TFF has built an outstanding reputation through a stellar selection of international films and guests, intriguing discussions, and frequent opportunities for connection between filmmakers and film lovers. The intense four-day schedule (kept secret until opening day) consists of retrospectives, world premieres, remarkable treasures from the past, and three major tributes to guest artists seldom seen elsewhere. World premieres have included The Crying Game, Sling Blade, Roger and Me, El Mariachi, and Eve's Bayou.

Founded in 1976, Toronto hosts one of the most respected and best organized festivals in the world. It's a noncompetitive 10-day event featuring nearly 300 films from more than 50 countries. International short films (under 59 minutes) are not accepted.

WORLDFEST-HOUSTON INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

P.O. Box 56566

Houston, TX 77256-6566

Phone: (713) 965-9955

Fax: (713) 965-9960

Website: www.worldfest.org

E-mail: mail@worldfest.org

Festival Date: Apr. 16-25, 2004

Entry Deadline: Passed (Feb. 13, 2004)

The 37th annual WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival proudly calls itself the "only truly independent film festival in North America," as it accepts only independent, undistributed, new work for its feature film competition section. While that claim is questionable (Slamdance also only accepts undistributed work), WorldFest apparently has no interest in serving as a publicity venue for the studios and major distributors.

WorldFest limits the number of feature films—far fewer than so many of the other large festivals. The aim is to give indie filmmakers a greater chance to showcase their works. Considered a "discovery" festival, WorldFest gave first honors to such film luminaries as Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Oliver Stone, Ang Lee, and David Lynch.
