Co-hosts Lucy Liu and Jonathan Groff announced the complete list of Tony nominees live from Paramount Hotel’s Diamond Horseshoe at 8:30 a.m. this morning.
“A Gentleman’s Guide to Love & Murder” leads the nominations with 10, including best musical, best performance by an actor in a leading role in a musical for both Bryce Pinkham and Jefferson Mays, best actress in a featured role for Lauren Worsham, and best director for Darko Tresnjak.
“Hedwig and the Angry Inch” trails with eight noms, including one for star Neil Patrick Harris. “A Raisin in the Sun” snagged nominations for its female actors; “The Cripple of Inishmaan” earned six nods—although nothing for star Daniel Radcliffe.
Screen-to-stage actor Bryan Cranston is nominated for leading actor for playing President Lyndon B. Johnson in “All the Way,” which is also nominated for best play. Backstage cover lady Idina Menzel was tapped for best actress in a leading role in a musical, up against Jessie Mueller from “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical”; both of their productions are also up for best musical.
Musicals derived from films are also doing well on Broadway with “Aladdin,” “Bullets Over Broadway” (based on the Woody Allen flick), and “Rocky” garnering 15 nominations between them, including a nod for Andy Karl.
Among the starry shutouts were Denzel Washington, Radcliffe, Patrick Stewart, James Franco, Ian McKellan, and Michelle Williams.
The Tony Awards air on CBS Sunday, June 8, from Radio City Music Hall; Hugh Jackman’s slated to host.
