Gina Rodriguez is continuing to get her well-deserved recognition. The actor will accept the Female Star of Tomorrow Award at next month’s CinemaCon.
The Golden Globe–winning Rodriguez currently stars as Jane Villanueva in the CW dramedy “Jane The Virgin.”
“Rodriguez is set to become one of most sought after actresses in Hollywood as she continues to earn rave reviews for her performances on both the small and big screen,” Mitch Neuhauser, managing director of CinemaCon, said in a statement. “A formidable talent and an actress who is truly on the rise we could not be more thrilled to be able to honor her as this year’s ‘CinemaCon Female Star of Tomorrow.’ ”
She will next appear in Peter Berg’s drama “Deepwater Horizon” this September about the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf Coast. She stars alongside Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Dylan O’Brien, and Kate Hudson in the film.
A Chicago native, Rodriguez danced with the local salsa dance company Fantasia Juvenil at 7 years old before her acceptance into Columbia University NY-Theatrical Collaboration at 16. Rodriguez was later accepted into NYU’s Tisch School of Arts. She trained for four years at both the Atlantic Theatre Company and Experimental Theatre Wing prior to her first on-screen work.
She’ll hit big screens again next year with director Alex Garland’s “Annihilation.” Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Tessa Thompson are also attached to star in Garland’s follow up to “Ex Machina.” It was announced earlier today that Oscar Isaac will also be joining Garland and the cast for this film.
In addition to her career kicking into high gear, Rodriguez launched social media campaign #MovementMondays in January 2016 to spotlight Latino actors in the industry, including her “Jane The Virgin” co-stars Andrea Navedo, Jaime Camil, and Ivonne Coll, America Ferrera, “Telenovela” star Jencarlos Canela, Robert Rodriguez, Rosa Salazar, and Isaac.
Rodriguez will receive her award at the CinemaCon Big Screen Achievement Awards Thursday, April 14 at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
CinemaCon is scheduled to run April 11–14.
