The Gotham Awards, honoring independent film, officially kicked off this year's awards season with the announcement of its slate of nominees. "Boyhood" and "Birdman" were both well-represented, but so were films from earlier in the year such as "Tracks," "Under the Skin," and "Obvious Child" (all three of which earned nods for their lead female actors Mia Wasikowska, Scarlett Johansson, and Jenny Slate, respectively).

Also of note: Stave Carell, Mark Ruffalo, and Channing Tatum were awarded a special jury award for their ensemble work in "Foxcatcher."

The awards will be presented in NYC Dec. 1 in a ceremony that will also honor Tilda Swinton, "Foxcatcher" director Bennett Miller, and Netflix's Ted Sarandos.
