New York is the city that never sleeps, and with so many events and activities each week across all five boroughs, it can be hard to know what’s actually worthwhile. Here are the events New York City actors should have on their radars this week.
A great reunion for “Great Comet” co-stars.
Grace McLean and Brittain Ashford, who starred together in the beloved Broadway musical “Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812,” will reunite for a one-night-only concert Aug. 23. Held at Feinstein’s/54 Below, the duo will traverse “the ups and downs of love and loss” through songs spanning ’50s rock, ’90s angst, and beyond. (Tickets start at $40)
“Celebrity Autobiography” is back.
“Celebrity Autobiography,” the monthly comedy show at the Triad in which New York’s finest read aloud from the actual autobiographies of various celebrities, returns this month with an all-star lineup. The Aug. 18 installment will feature Mario Cantone, Carol Kane, Richard Kind, Alysia Reiner, and others, all of whom will have audiences walking away wondering, “Did they really write that?” (The answer is always “yes.”) (Tickets start at $40)
Sleep with celebrities—sort of.
On Aug. 20, you can once again have the chance to sleep with several stars of stage and screen at the Covenant House Sleep Out to support youth homelessness. Join Rachel Brosnahan, Audra McDonald, Keala Settle, Caissie Levy, and others at the Covenant House crisis shelter beginning at 7 p.m., at which time participants will be given sleeping bags and cardboard for their night on the street. Funds raised from the event benefit the more than 4.2 million youths experiencing homelessness each year. (Free, though registration is required)
Experience “King Kong” in a multitude of mediums.
Before it arrives on Broadway this fall, revisit (or enjoy for the first time) the 1933 film “King Kong.” The Jacob Burns Film Center, in partnership with the Actors Fund, will host a special screening of the classic on Aug. 21, as part of its “Life on the Stage: Conversation and Film” series. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A with members of the creative team for the incoming musical adaptation and will be held just outside the city at the Jacobs Burns Film Center in Pleasantville. ($20)
Enjoy a night of Stephen Sondheim and Sonja Morgan.
The cultural confluence you didn’t know you need: “Pretty Women: A Real Housewives Musical Revue” returns to the Duplex Aug. 21, once again seeing your favorite “Real Housewives” (as portrayed by some of New York’s funniest), singing the tunes of Stephen Sondheim and other classic composers. This installment will feature Marissa Solomon, Schuyler Robinson, Damian Bellino, and others, accompanied by Andrew Whitbeck. ($10)
