“The Eddy”
“The Hate U Give” star Amandla Stenberg is heading to Netflix for the upcoming musical drama series “The Eddy,” created by Damien Chazelle. Stenberg will star alongside Andre Holland in the eight-part series that will be set in contemporary multicultural Paris and revolve around “a club, its owner, the house band, and the chaotic city that surrounds them.” Production begins this spring in Paris, and the series is slated to premiere in 2020. Julie Harkin, Laure Cochener, and Raphaëlle Beck are attached as casting directors.
“Nine Perfect Strangers”
Hulu has also been busy booking its next big projects. “Nine Perfect Strangers” will be the latest for the streaming platform and the latest major novel to get a small screen adaptation. The Nicole Kidman-led and produced series, based on the book from “Big Little Lies” author Liane Moriarty, has been given a straight-to-series order. The book and series take place “at a boutique health-and-wellness resort that promises healing and transformation as nine stressed city dwellers try to get on a path to a better way of living,” watched over by Masha (Kidman), the resort director. A CD has not yet been made public, but an option may be “Big Little Lies” CD David Rubin.
“The Father”
Recent Oscar winner Olivia Colman has found her next big role. Colman and Anthony Hopkins will headline “The Father,” a movie adaptation by Florian Zeller of his hit stage play. The story follows a mischievous and highly independent man who has refused assistance from his daughter, Anne, as he ages, until she decides to move to Paris with her partner. Zeller will also direct the drama from the screenplay he co-wrote with Christopher Hampton (“Dangerous Liaisons”). Principal photography will get underway this month in the UK. This will be Zeller’s feature directorial debut.
“Land”
Coming off the final season of “House of Cards,” Robin Wright will make her feature directorial debut with “Land.” The wilderness drama will also star Wright, who will play Edee Mathis, a lawyer consumed by grief who resolves to remove herself completely from life as she’s known it until she crosses paths with a First Nations local who helps her resolve her demons. Jesse Chatham and Liz Hannah are writing the original screenplay, and the film is set to begin production this summer in British Columbia. Wright has previous directorial experience on the aforementioned Netflix hit series, where she directed 10 episodes. Keep an eye out if you are in British Columbia for future casting opportunities.
“Those Who Wish Me Dead”
The upcoming thriller “Those Who Wish Me Dead” has been given a home at New Line Cinema, and principal photography on the film will start later this month. The project stars Angelina Jolie and the recently-announced Nicholas Hoult, as well as Jon Bernthal, Tyler Perry, Aidan Gillen, Medina Senghore, Finn Little, and Jake Weber. Taylor Sheridan will direct the adaptation he penned of the Michael Kortya bestselling novel, which has been described as “a female-driven neo-Western set against a wildfire in the Montana wilderness.”
