“The Notebook”
The classic love story wasn’t over and it still isn’t over: Nicolas Sparks’s “The Notebook” will soon be coming to the Broadway stage. Folk star and songwriter Ingrid Michaelson will be writing the music and lyrics for an adaptation of the hit love story, which was famously adapted for the screen in 2004 starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. Playwright and “This Is Us” supervising producer Bekah Brunstetter will write the book. Michaelson is already familiar with Broadway—she temporarily played the role of Sonya in 2017’s “Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812”—and she, like the fans, is already excited about this new project. Additional creative team members, production timeline, and casting will be announced at a later date, but this will certainly be a project to watch for the hopeless romantics and actors alike. “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”
A few days after the news rapper-turned-“Crazy Rich Asians” star Awkwafina is in final negotiations for a part in the forthcoming “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle” sequel, another star has been welcomed into the fray. Danny DeVito will join the film, led by Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan, who will all be reprising their roles from the 2017 smash hit. The news comes as the industry veteran is about to return to the screen in Disney’s live-action “Dumbo.” In addition to the original cast, Jake Kasdan will also return as the director (as well as writers Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner), so expect to see casting directors Nicole Abellera and Jeanne McCarthy also making a return. “Batwoman”
“Batwoman” is officially taking flight! It was announced this summer “Orange is the New Black” star Ruby Rose would be donning the bat suit to play Batwoman in a potential CW pilot adaptation. Now, following a few months of development, and her first appearance on the network’s three-way DC Comics series crossover, the network has handed out a pilot order. David Nutter, who has previously helmed pilots for “Arrow” and “The Flash,” will direct the pilot from showrunner Caroline Dries (“The Vampire Diaries”). The potential series will be the first superhero series led by a lesbian character. As with all Greg Berlanti’s DC Comics projects, the casting will surely go to David Rapaport and Lindsey Baldasare, so keep an eye out for casting opportunities soon.
“Jay and Silent Bob”
All the way back in 2017, director Kevin Smith announced he would be working on a “Jay and Silent Bob” reboot, and now, after recovering from a heart attack, he’s back to work and fulfilling his promises. On Jan. 1, Smith tweeted he “spent the first day of 2019 having a #JayAndSilentBobReboot pre-pre-production meeting,” with a photo taken by co-star Jay Mewes. The two made their debut in the cult classic “Clerks,” followed up by “Mallrats,” “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back,” and more, but the duo was last seen in the 2006 sequel “Clerks 2.” The reboot is only in pre-production (or, pre-pre-production, in Smith’s words), but it will reportedly and cheekily feature the duo returning to Hollywood to stop a reboot of the “Bluntman and Chronic” movie from getting made. Meagan Lewis will serve as casting director.
