4 Guys Named Jose'and Una Mujer Named Mar
you've probably guessed, '4 Guys Named Jose' and Una Mujer Named Mar is one of those thinly-plotted revues celebrating a particular musical genre--like the similarly named 'Five Guys Named Moe.' Dolores Prida's whisper of a book sets the action in a VFW Hall in Omaha, Nebraska.(Prida and David Coffman are credited with 'conceiving' the show.) Four Latino gentlemen with different heritages (Puerto Rico, Cuba, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic) are staging a show of their favorite songs with a young lady named Maria. But she can't make it, so her roommate, who's just been dumped by her boyfriend, steps in at the last minute. That's it for plot, folks.Still, all that matters with a show like this is the quality of the numbers, since the book is merely a weak clothesline upon which to hang them. The cast members all have fine voices and style. Henry Gainza has the best pipes. Allen Hidalgo is the hip-swiveling dancer of the group. Ricardo Puente is in the unfortunate position of delivering most of the limp comedy, but performs his songs with heart, as does Philip Anthony. As the substitute Maria, Lissette Gonzalez, a former Miss America finalist, cavorts as Carmen Miranda, shakes her booty like Jennifer Lopez, and belts out a song like Gloria Estefan.Susana Tubert's direction makes the best use of the rather cramped stage at the Blue Angel, and Maria Torres's choreography gives us flash, dash, and spice. The negligible story is dispatched quickly -- it's basically squabbles between characters, which are all resolved as quickly as they are brought up. The press materials state that the show is supposed to combat Latino stereotypes, but this theme isn't particularly developed. It's the music that counts here, and thanks to Oscar Hernandez's musical supervision and arrangements and Ennio Gatti's musical direction, '4 Guys' is an entertaining, undemanding evenin
