ANDREW COHEN

A commercial and fine art photographer for 20 years, Cohen has been "shooting people" in a variety of contexts, from corporate to editorial, so it's only natural that he should do actors' headshots, as well. JAY DANIEL ASSOCIATES

With more than 20 years of experience doing headshots, Daniel offers a basic package for $100, which includes one roll of film and a contact sheet, plus $16 for one 8x10 and $35 for makeup; or an hour studio sitting for $200-250. Digital retouching on site. (415) 459-1495.

Specializing in b/w photography, Skip Doughty has been running this storefront studio and lab in Rocklin for 11 years. He shoots with a medium-format camera (no 35mm), and offers digital retouching. (916) 624-5390.

JOSEPH GRECO

Twenty-five-year veteran Greco, who has a photography degree from the Academy of Art in San Francisco, charges women $200 for two rolls, including a makeup/hair artist, two proofs, and one retouched 8x10. DANIEL HERRON STUDIOS

Herron shoots in his main office in Palo Alto, where he's worked for 13 years, and at Fort Mason in San Francisco. He charges women $145 a roll, including makeup, a proof sheet, and one 8x10. Men pay $125. (650) 969-3777.

Anderson has been doing headshots for nearly six years, and offers one roll of b/w for $49, including three looks (commercial, dramatic, and three-quarter) and one 8x10. LESLIE KATZ

In the business for 10 years, Katz does headshots for adults and children in color or b/w. Her basic package is $150 for one roll of 35mm, proof sheet, and one 5x7. SUSAN KENEDI

In the business for 11 years, Kenedi specializes in kids, but also does many headshots for adults. She works in natural light. Rates are $150 for the first look, which includes one roll, negatives, proof sheet, and one 8x10 (color or b/w). After that, each roll is $75 per. A working actor and model for eight years now, Leras was previously a photojournalist. He works with natural light on location, usually in downtown San Francisco. He also shoots in Sonoma County. Allen Nomura has been doing headshots since 1975, and owns Mission Camera Shop in the Mission District, which has had a separate studio for headshots since 1994. LARRY MERKLE PHOTOGRAPHY

A professional photographer for 18 years, Merkle works in his San Francisco studio or on location. He charges $175 for two rolls, a contact sheet, and three 8x10s. There is no restriction on the number of clothing changes. A makeup/hair professional is available for an additional fee. Craig Merrill specializes in kids but also does a lot of headshots for adults, shooting in his Alameda studio or on location. He's been in business for about 18 years, with his wife, Grace McHugh, doing hair and makeup. Prices range from $150 for one roll, with 4x6 prints instead of a contact sheet, to as high as $350 for a composite. Clients get the negatives, and extra 8x10s are $8-10 per. (510) 865-3629.

NORBERT

With a Ph.D. in art history, the German-born Norbert shoots mainly adult actors in three-quarter poses, using natural light on location in the East Bay. His fee of $150 includes two rolls, negatives, help with makeup and styling, and a variety of poses. The cost for 8x10s are $6.50 each, with no extra charge for color. POINT OF VIEW PRODUCTIONS

Former actor Karil Daniels has been a photographer for more than 20 years. Based in San Francisco, she shoots only on location and looks for economical shortcuts--for example, an hour's shoot of one roll could be as low as $100 if the client takes the roll to the lab himself and has his own proof sheet made. JEANINE REISBIG PHOTOGRAPHY

Reisbig estimates that she has photographed about 500 actors in seven years. She currently charges $65 (plus tax) for one roll, including proof, two 8x10s, and styling assistance. Reisbig said she provides lots of coaching and believes in making people look like themselves, and that she also tries to keep her rates reasonable for her clients. (415) 861-7216.

ROCHELLE RICHARDS PHOTOGRAPHY

Richards started doing headshots 15 years ago, and shoots both in Los Angeles and the Bay Area. She is a professional makeup artist, and uses natural light only. This three-person business, in existence since the mid-'70s, has a large African-American clientele and works mostly in the studio, with extra fees for location shots and for a professional makeup person.
