How to Calculate Your Instagram Engagement Rate

If you’re a performer posting on Instagram, you’ve probably asked yourself at least once: “Are people even seeing this?” Maybe you’ve got a killer reel of your last dance combo or a carousel of headshots you finally love—and the likes are meh. Or maybe you posted a selfie in bad lighting, and suddenly it’s your highest-performing post of the month. What gives?

This is where your Instagram engagement rate comes into play. Let’s break down what engagement rate actually is, why it matters (especially if you’re a performer building a personal brand), how to calculate it, and what you can do if your numbers look… less than Broadway-ready.

What is engagement rate, exactly?

Instagram engagement rate is the percentage of people who interact with your content (via likes, comments, shares, and saves) compared to either your followers or the people who saw the post. It’s a measure of how “into you” your audience really is.

You know how you can have hundreds or even thousands of followers, but only a few people actually do anything with your posts? Engagement rate tells you whether people are just scrolling by or if they’re actually stopping, feeling something, and tapping that heart (or better yet, saving the post for later—engagement gold!).

Casting directors, reps, and producers are increasingly checking out your socials, not just to see how many followers you have, but to see if people are engaging. Are you building community? Are people paying attention? Are you showing up as you online?

Why does engagement rate matter for performers?

You don’t need 100,000 followers to have influence—you need connection. Whether you’re a musical theater actor, a commercial talent, or a multi-hyphenate content creator, your Instagram can be a digital portfolio and a personal brand builder if you know how to work it.

A high engagement rate shows:

  • Your content is meaningful to your audience—even if that audience is 800 people instead of 80,000.
  • You’re not just posting into the void; you’re starting conversations.
  • You’re building trust (which is what really matters when you’re trying to stand out in a crowded field).

And yes, if you’re hoping to land a collab with a brand or get your foot in the influencer door, engagement rate is one of the first metrics someone will look at.

There are a few different ways to calculate engagement rate, but don’t stress—we’ll walk through the main ones step-by-step.

1. Engagement rate by followers

This one’s the most common.

Formula:
(Likes + comments + saves) ÷ followers × 100

Example:
You’ve got 3,500 followers. One of your posts gets 120 likes, 15 comments, and 10 saves.
That’s 145 engagements.
(145 ÷ 3,500) × 100 = 4.14%

That’s a solid rate!

2. Engagement rate by reach

This is a little more accurate because not all your followers will see your post (thanks, algorithm). Reach = the number of unique people who saw it.

Formula:
(Likes + comments + saves) ÷ reach × 100

Example:
If that same post reached 1,200 people, your rate is:
(145 ÷ 1,200) × 100 = 12.08%

Whoa! That’s some high engagement.

3. Engagement rate by impressions

This one’s similar but includes multiple views by the same people. Most useful if you’re analyzing paid ads or viral content.

Formula:
(Likes + comments + saves) ÷ impressions × 100

What’s the average engagement rate on Instagram?

Stats vary, but here’s what the pros say:

  • 1–3% is generally considered good.
  • 3–6% is great.
  • Anything above 6% is rockstar level.
  • If you’re under 1% consistently, it might be time to shake up your strategy.

Recent reports from Later and the Influencer Marketing Factory show that average rates in 2025 are lower than they used to be—thanks to more content, a tougher algorithm, and a little burnout. But that doesn’t mean it’s all doom and gloom.

Don’t compare yourself to mega-influencers. Look inward and focus on building consistent engagement with the community you do have.

How to improve your Instagram engagement rate

Here’s where we get to the good stuff. If you’re thinking, OK, my rate is sitting at, like, 0.9%... what now?—don’t panic. Small tweaks can make a big difference.

Try this:

  • Use carousels and reels. According to Social Insider, these formats are still top performers in 2025. Reels are great for visibility; carousels encourage saves and shares.
  • Ask questions in your captions. A simple prompt = more comments = better engagement.
  • Post when your audience is online. Check your Insights. Don’t post when your followers are sleeping.
  • Respond to every comment. Instagram rewards interaction on both sides.
  • Collaborate with other creators. You’ll both benefit from shared audiences.
  • Show your personality. We follow people, not products. Be yourself. Share your rehearsal fails, your early-morning call time chaos, or your post-audition feelings. That stuff connects.

Still unsure what your followers love most? Dive into your Insights. Look at what’s gotten saves, shares, and comments. Reverse engineer your own success.
