The sequel series will touch on similar themes of indoctrination, power, and resistance. Bruce Miller, creator and executive producer of “The Handmaid’s Tale,” is leading the project, and Ann Dowd (“The Leftovers,” “Masters of Sex”) will reprise her role as Aunt Lydia.

“The Testaments” is being adapted from Margaret Atwood’s 2019 novel of the same name, which continues the story introduced in her 1985 novel “The Handmaid’s Tale.” The sequel takes place in Gilead several years after the events of the original, following Aunt Lydia (Dowd) as the protagonist. Co-starring Chase Infiniti (“Presumed Innocent”) and Lucy Halliday (“Blue Jean”) in lead roles alongside Dowd, the story will focus on the lives of the young women who have grown up in Gilead and know nothing of the outside world. Per Deadline, the key storylines of the upcoming series will center around Aunt Lydia’s experiences and the growing rebellion among the women in Gilead as they uncover the regime’s dark secrets.
