Agustina Berenguer was recently cast in “1989,” a musical set during one of Argentina’s most politically tense and economically strenuous periods. The creative endeavor combined live rock music, original choreography, and innovative storytelling.
“I was part of the ensemble of ‘1989,’ [which had] two leads and only four of us, so I had to bring many characters to life,” Berenguer says. “One of my favorites was Silvana Di Lorenzo, an Argentinian soap opera diva. Silvana was an ’80s drama queen and we had a blast getting to understand the over-the-top type of acting that her scenes needed.”
Over the past year in theater, a diversity of underrepresented backgrounds and genres have taken center stage. Berenguer’s experience working on “1989” is another testament to that.
“I got to work in New York representing my country, Argentina,” she says. “The exciting part of ‘1989’ was that we all had a voice and worked as a team to bring it to life.... It was interesting to see the audience’s reaction to another culture. We brought our culture into the city and I am proud of having been part of it!”
