As any Skype user knows, live videoconferencing isn’t a foolproof means of communication. Faulty audio and visual can make for an especially stressful conversation if you’re auditioning for a movie.

“I think everything that could have gone wrong technologically went wrong,” says actor Anna Walker of her recent audition for “Not Where I Want to Be.” After failing to get the camera working via Skype, she and the film’s director and producers switched to Google Chat, where everything went smoothly. “My favorite part of the audition was getting to talk about my perception of the character and how I imagined the details of her life that were not contained in the script,” she recalls.

The team also used Google Chat to read through the script with actor Kyle Ramsden, who, like Walker, was cast through a Backstage listing. Asked why she continues to use the site, Walker cites the easy-to-use interface and search engine filter. “I don’t waste time sifting through hundreds of notices.”

She adds, “I know that Backstage will continue to help me to get cast in the kind of projects that I love!”
