Jeanne Mailloux was rather intimidated by her recent audition for the web series “Complexities”—and for good reason. “When I got in the room and ran the scene, the director asked me to try a completely different emotional place the scene could come from,” she recalls.
The instruction, though nerve-racking, ultimately led Mailloux to a much deeper interpretation. “My take on [the character] wasn’t as dimensional as what the director and I developed in the audition room,” she says. Luckily, after landing the job, that helpful guidance continued all the way through production on the project.
“The director toned me down a lot,” Mailloux explains. “My face is super expressive and I always get the note ‘The camera is right here,’ as they hold their hand in front of their nose. I’m learning to speak more with my eyes and trust that I know what the scene and the lines mean to me, trust that I’m connecting with the other person, and just be.”
Mailloux booked “Complexities” through Backstage, which she often turns to for her next gig. “I keep coming back because so many indie projects are posted there,” she says. “I’m kind of addicted to self-submissions and I look for them everywhere.”
