Hitting New York City’s Hudson Guild Theatre this July, “We Were Children” is a new work from playwright Maia Henkin and director Rhys McClelland about 16-year-old Kaleb, a shy, mute artist, and his parasitic relationship with his alter ego, Blake. Actor Luke David Young is bringing Blake to the stage thanks to Backstage’s casting notices.
“He’s really the dark horse of the play,” says Young of the character. “He’s always been an outsider throughout his life, but survives day to day by plotting his revenge against the other kids in school that constantly exclude him.” He goes on to say that he’s used to playing darker roles: “At first it was unintentional, but I have grown to love playing the bad guy. Who wouldn’t?”
“We Were Children” is far from Young’s first Backstage success story. “Using Backstage even helped me acquire my SAG-AFTRA eligibility!” he exclaims. “I have been using Backstage for three years now. I used it when I was working in Boston and booked a touring show that ran at a number of festivals. After that, I relocated to NYC and have been relying on Backstage ever since.”
