Nyah Vollmar may be young, but her confidence is far from pint-size. In fact, it is that very self-assurance that landed the 12-year-old talent her first-ever acting gig, a commercial for the Force Band by Sphero, a “Star Wars” product.

“The casting director saw that I sing the national anthem in front of thousands of people and in front of cameras regularly,” says Vollmar of the job, which she booked through Backstage. “That helped him conclude that, even though I’m just a kid, I will be comfortable in front of Sphero’s cameras.”

Living in a small town outside of Portland, Oregon, acting gigs are less plentiful for Vollmar than they would be in major cities. So when the young actor decided she wanted to break into the business earlier this year, she, along with her supportive parents, knew where to turn.

“Backstage has job opportunities that are not just local, it also has national and, in the case of Sphero, international audiences,” says Vollmar of why she began using Backstage and continues to do so. (She suspects her father checks the site several times a day.) “Plus, there is a wide range of work available, from print to TV and film to musical theater—all areas I enjoy working in!”
