In today’s competitive industry, having a compelling social media presence is a must. For actor Emily Spadaford, it even booked her a job in a feature film. After coming across a casting notice for “A Christmas Carol” on Backstage, Spadaford sent in a video audition and attracted the filmmakers with her YouTube channel.
“In my submissions, I always link [to] my YouTube page,” she says. “Because that is where I am growing my audience and cultivating my online presence.”
At first, Spadaford was asked to be the hair and makeup artist for the film, but was later offered a role written specifically for her. “They also wanted me to act as the YouTube liaison for the project, shooting behind-the-scenes vlogs and Christmas-themed videos with the cast and creative team,” she says. “And then they decided to write a scene and a character for me.”
Spadaford plays Fiona in the film, whom she describes as a “hardworking woman from Scrooge’s past.”
Reflecting on her filming experience, she says, “Their main goal was always to have fun and to create a positive working environment, and that’s all I could have asked for.”
