Emily Vere Nicoll is a Backstage devotee. “I always try to stay on top of my submissions for roles I feel right for and read many of the articles for tips and advice on the industry,” she says. “It is an invaluable resource.” In her case, persistence paid off; she was recently cast in two short films.

In “Belief,” Vere Nicoll plays Sara, a young woman coming to terms with the fact that she has lost faith in herself and her relationship. And in “C.I.T.,” Vere Nicoll plays another Sarah, a counselor-in-training at a horseback-riding summer camp for girls.

“ ‘Belief’ was a one-day whirlwind,” Vere Nicoll says of filming. “C.I.T.” was a bit more of a commitment: a five-day shoot on location at Road’s End Farm in New Hampshire.

“Shooting ‘C.I.T.’ was an absolute dream,” she says. “It was an incredible adventure where we stayed in the same cabins the campers do and got to groom, feed, and ride the horses.”

While perusing Backstage’s casting notices, Vere Nicoll says she is drawn to girls with a backbone. “I typically look for roles that have an emotional pull or drive for me personally, as well as within the script. I am attracted to strong female roles with a complex crisis or dilemma.”
