Thanks to Backstage, Kristin Dawn-Dumas was cast in three productions: “A Little Grits and Butter,” “Witness the Beginning,” and “Songs of the Harlem River.” The three characters Dawn-Dumas portrayed existed in entirely different worlds, helping to strengthen her versatility as a performer.

“I’ve played a high school dancing queen from rural Alabama trying to fit in in the big city, a tribal woman from the dawn of civilization, and a charming young woman preparing to be married. I’m glad to have had the opportunity to experience the variety within my type,” Dawn-Dumas says.

Dawn-Dumas checks Backstage’s casting notices almost every day, even if she’s currently working on a project. She says that through these three projects, she has learned and grown as an actor—plus she’s established some contacts along the way.

“Each experience is valuable, despite the long commutes and late nights,” she says. “Working on all of these projects has taught me things about myself and my craft that I otherwise wouldn’t have learned. I’ve developed valuable connections in these projects, and that’s probably the best part, across the board.”
