“I tend to gravitate toward the dark and intense,” says Selena Mars. “I love a good plot twist.” The SAG-eligible actor recently sated her thirst for the dark side with a modern-day noir called “Murder’s Sweet Scent,” a short film she booked through Backstage’s online casting notices.
Mars played Francine Black, a private detective in Battery Park City with “a no-nonsense, tough exterior, but also a soft femininity at the same time.”
“I felt a connection with this character immediately,” she says. In keeping with the neo-noir genre, the role required extensive voiceover work; Mars recorded multiple takes at home in addition to several Skype auditions and in-person meetings.
“Starring in this film with this terrific cast and crew and with NYC as the backdrop has been amazing. Pure magic!” Mars, who is also a trained singer and composer, browses Backstage daily for similarly magical opportunities. Her familiarity with the site has helped launch her promising career in more ways than one: “I found my current manager and agency representation through backstage.com.” Congrats, Selena!
