Who says you can’t have fun while hustling? For Jill Galbraith, hard work and a good time go hand-in-hand.
Don’t forget to enjoy your successes.
“Pretty much any opportunity to practice the craft, collaborate with other artists and create something new—and get paid to do it to boot—is an occasion I welcome with open arms. I would encourage [others] to apply to as many projects as possible and to enjoy the ride.”
Basic editing skills can go a long way.
“After much trial and error, I edited [a project] myself on iMovie. I highly recommend getting in touch with the basics of editing, especially if you want to create your own content. Film, after all, is an editor’s medium.”
Backstage is more than jobs; it’s a community.
“There is an incredible diversity of projects on Backstage, in all levels and facets of the industry. I would be remiss if I didn’t shout out my good friends at Pop Up Theater, Inc., all of whom I met through an audition from Backstage. Now that I think about it, I’ve met a great deal of my friends and [formed] lasting relationships through Backstage. And they all started with an audition!”
Trust your instincts.
“Since joining SAG-AFTRA, [I’ve been] more selective about what I apply to. I look to see if I resonate with the project, and I go from there. It’s all about the gut feeling!”
When in doubt, shoot it yourself.
“Lead with your best work, keep it tight, and if you don’t have a clip that shows you off, shoot it yourself!”
