The Kesselring Prize for playwriting has been awarded this year to David Auburn for "Proof," earning the playwright a $10,000 cash award.

"Proof," which recently began a Broadway run at the Walter Kerr Theatre, was launched last spring Off-Broadway at Manhattan Theatre Club, which nominated Auburn for the prize. "Proof" centers on the family of a brilliant mathematician.

Auburn is also a recipient of a Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship.

The Kesselring Prize runner-up is Jessica Hagedorn for "Dogeaters," nominated by The Public Theater, which will present it later this season.

The names of 10 other nominees were put forth for consideration. Each playwright submitted a biography and a play for review by a National Arts Club panel including John Guare and Donald Margulies. The award will be presented Nov. 19 at a reading and dinner gala.
