“The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial”

Legendary filmmaker William Friedkin (“The French Connection,” “The Exorcist”) is updating a midcentury classic for the big screen, marking the Oscar winner’s first project in more than 10 years. “The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial” is based on Herman Wouk’s 1953 play, itself adapted from the author’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel. The film centers on the court-martial of Navy Lieutenant Steve Maryk for wresting command of his ship from the mentally unsound Lt. Commander Queeg. Kiefer Sutherland is set to star as the captain, a role that has previously been played by Humphrey Bogart and Eric Bogosian. Friedkin will bring “The Caine Mutiny” into the present day by moving the action up from World War II to the contemporary conflict with Iran. Denise Chamian is adding additional talent as production nears a January 2023 start in and around Los Angeles.

“Hysteria!”

Peacock is delving into one of America’s most notorious moral panics on a new coming-of-age series. “Hysteria!” will explore the Satanic panic of the 1980s, when unsubstantiated rumors of devil worship and ritual abuse swept the country, leading to the persecution of innocent people. The thriller follows a high school heavy metal band that seeks to capitalize on the disappearance of a popular football player by adopting an occult image. But when seemingly supernatural murders and kidnappings begin to sweep the town, its citizens turn on the teens. Matthew Scott Kane (“Stitchers”) is writing the series, which will be directed and produced by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (“Dungeons & Dragons”). While the project is currently sans cast, Betty Mae is assembling actors. Production is slated to start early next year in Atlanta.

“Family Leave”

Netflix is drawing inspiration from “Freaky Friday” in a new family film, based on Amy Krouse Rosenthal’s children’s book “Bedtime for Mommy.” One morning, the Brenners wake up to discover that they’ve inexplicably switched bodies with a family on the other side of the globe. They must find the strangers in an attempt to reverse the swap, all while navigating the world in unfamiliar bodies. Jennifer Garner is on board to star and produce the film, which is written by Victoria Strouse (“Finding Dory,” “October Road”). Though no director is currently attached, Davis/Baddeley Casting is assembling additional talent in anticipation of an early December shoot in L.A.
