Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” tracks the tragic consequences of the relentless ambition that unravels a family’s fashion empire. In mounting this true-crime tale of love, deceit, and murder, Scott employed a venerable ensemble to portray the Gucci dynasty.
At the forefront is Lady Gaga as Patrizia Reggiani, a determined, charismatic woman whose chance romance with a Gucci heir led to the now-iconic love affair. Gaga disappears into the part with the same commitment she brings to her onstage persona. Her Patrizia is vivacious and cunning, and Gaga’s natural magnetism lends the character a larger-than-life presence. But Gaga also modulates her performance through subtle shifts in her physicality in order to shade Patrizia with notes of insecurity and doubt.
In the orbit of that powerhouse performance is Adam Driver as Maurizio Gucci, the ambivalent high-fashion scion who becomes the object of Patrizia’s affection and, eventually, malice. Maurizio’s extended family includes Paolo Gucci, a black sheep impishly played by a committed Jared Leto. Paolo’s ambition is as large as his talent is marginal, and Leto’s good-natured vulnerability makes Paolo a sympathetic figure. Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons round out the main players as Aldo and Rodolfo, the feuding elder Gucci brothers who control the family business; these two screen legends anchor this complex saga through their considerable charm and gravitas.
