No one likes being a broke artist necessarily, but you do learn some useful life lessons!

1. You can live off of Top Ramen for a really long time.

2. If rent is due on Tuesday, you can mail the check at the end of the day so it is postmarked and not late, but it won’t go out until Wednesday, which means your landlord won’t get in until Thursday, and won’t try to cash it until Friday when you get paid and actually have money in your account.

3. The family meal at the restaurant you work at is everything.

4. Cable? What’s cable?

5. Some of the most fun you can have costs nothing at all.

6. The only way to see a show is on comp tickets.

7. Three words: Student. Loan. Forbearance.

8. A friend giving you their HBO GO password is about the nicest thing anyone can do for you.

9. A birthday card from Grandma with $23 in it is like winning the lottery.

10. Christmas gifts become things you need, not things you want.

11. You will buy yourself the cheapest off-brand food you can find, but Mr. Whiskers still gets the finest cat food money can buy.

12. Gyms are expensive, but running is free.

13. Holidays are for overtime.

14. Two-Buck Chuck from Trader Joe’s is the cheapest buzz around.

15. “Sick” is a relative term depending on the existence or quality of your health insurance.
