London Casting: Lead + Supporting Roles Available in Short Film ‘Melanie’

Hello and welcome to one of our shoutouts for projects casting around the U.K. As always there’s a mix of opportunities for all ages, abilities, and locations but do remember to check if you fit the bill before applying. “Melanie” is a film following an aspiring black model as she searches for approval from a society obsessed with European beauty standards. The team is casting the film in London and has a range of male and female parts across ages. Breakdowns for lead and supporting characters are below.

The title role, Melanie, is for a female actor, aged 15–25. Applicants need to have a youthful look and be comfortable on the catwalk as well as in underwear. You’ll also need to fit the following physical attributes: Black, British, size 8–10, height 5’6”–5’9”, and have natural kinky hair. References include Lupita Nyong'o, Duckie Thot, and Viola Davis.

Yvonne is Melanie’s mother, for a female actor, aged 30–45. She’s got a lighter complexion and has European facial features whilst not being mixed race. Applicants should be 5’6”–5’9” with natural straight hair or loose curls (wig optional). References include Sanaa Lathan, Taraji P. Henson, Beyoncé, and Jada Pinkett Smith.

Sean is Melanie’s brother, for a young actor, aged 16–20. Candidates should have a slim build, be 5’9”–6’0”, and hair should be number one or waves. As with his mother, Sean has European facial features. References include Michael B. Jordan and Will Smith.

Natalie and Natasha are Melanie’s friends and are still in school. The roles are for actors, aged 15–20. Both roles need you to be size 6–10, height 5’5”–5’7”, and have natural curly or straight hair. Again, you’ll need European facial features and a fair or medium complexion. References include Sanaa Lathan, Taraji P. Henson, Beyoncé, and Jada Pinkett Smith.

The role of the teacher needs a white actor, aged 31–50.

Please note that all roles require authentic London accents and actors must be based in London. All roles pay £10 per hour or £100 per day. The film shoots on location in London in May.
