Prime Video’s “Overcompensating” debuted May 15 and is already generating buzz about whether or not it’ll get a second season. Created by and starring internet star Benito Skinner, the coming-of-age series follows Benny, a football player and high school homecoming king who is starting his college freshman year in the closet and becomes fast friends with Carmen, an outsider on a mission to fit in once and for all. While there hasn’t been any official news about Season 2 at this time, we decided to round up some similar gigs casting talent today. From a surreal queer romance film to a coming-of-age surf drama, these gigs will hold you over until we find out the fate of the new Prime Video series.
“Maybe Next Time”
Neue Americana is seeking talent for “Maybe Next Time,” a queer, coming-of-age romance that takes a surrealist, dreamy interpretation of the trials and tribulations of first love. Two Florida-based female or nonbinary actors of color, aged 18–25, are wanted to play the protagonist Nat, and her love interest, Lilah. Talent must be able to roller skate at at least a basic level. Filming will take place in June through August in Jacksonville, Florida. Pay is $100 for the supporting role and $150 for the lead role.

“Freak & Donna”
Join the cast of “Freak & Donna,” a coming-of-age web series about a dynamic duo of overly confident nonbinary 30-year-old best friends who live in their own world and are resistant to growing up. A nonbinary actor, age 28–38, is wanted to play the role of Leaf, the lovable, aloof, and accidentally goofy local dealer. Filming will take place on June 7 in Brooklyn, New York City. Pay is undisclosed by the production.

“The Misfit Toys”
Stellar City Productions has begun casting “The Misfit Toys,” a modern-day indie pop high school musical about four exceptionally talented kids who form a band, stop a bully, and fall in love. Four actors, aged 18–22, are wanted for the lead roles of Candy, Treat, Finn, and Blake. All roles will require the ability to rap, beatbox, play an instrument, and/or sing. The actor playing Finn must also be able to play a ball sport or be able to skateboard. Callbacks will be held on June 20–21. Filming will take place on Oct. 8–10 in Manhattan, NYC. Pay is $200 per day.

“Kids On The Wall”
Join the cast of “Kids On The Wall,” a coming-of-age surf drama about a group of foster and outcast teens who form an unlikely brotherhood around a legendary graffiti-covered surf wall. San Diego-based actors and models, aged 16–60, are wanted for lead and supporting roles. Production is also hiring an assistant director. Filming will begin this fall in San Diego and Orange County, with possible dates in Hawaii, as well. Pay is $75–$150 per day for up to 30 days of work.

“The Other Half”
Join “The Other Half,” a comedy/drama about a young gay couple in a long-term open relationship and their 24 hours of breaking up, sex, partying, drugs, and getting back together again. Two London-based male or nonbinary actors, aged 20–30, are wanted for the two lead characters in the film. Talent must be comfortable with simulated sex and full frontal nudity (production will utilize closed sets and an intimacy coordinator). Filming will take place on Aug. 11–17 in London. Pay is £1,400.

“Unwritten”
X.Wynn Films is currently casting actors for “Unwritten,” a short coming-of-age teen sports drama exploring identity, masculinity, and the inner lives of young Black men through the lens of a high school football star. Talent, aged 8–45, is wanted for various roles, including the protagonist James. Production is also hiring a gaffer and a director of photography. Filming will begin this summer in Cincinnati, Ohio. Pay is up to $500 with the exact rate TBD.

“Going-Away Party”
Join the cast of “Going-Away Party,” a YA short film with themes of climate change, coming-of-age, human nature/survival, and young love and following five college students who have been chosen to take part in a first-of-its-kind environmental research project on a man-made island off the East Coast, where they must fend for themselves in the face of near-certain death. Three actors, aged 18–25, are wanted for lead roles. Rehearsals will take place over Zoom, followed by filming on Long Beach Island, New Jersey, with dates TBD. Join the cast of “It Is Very Complicated,” a short film inspired by a girl trying to figure out when and how to lose her virginity. “Sophomore Year, 2020”
Red Road Films is seeking talent for “Sophomore Year, 2020,” a micro-budget indie coming-of-age dramedy set during the COVID-19 lockdowns and following a group of college students navigating a reckless and emotionally charged summer filled with parties, hookups, and self-discovery in search of connection and meaning. A male actor, age 22–26, is wanted to play the role of Julian, a charismatic recent grad and one of the main character's recent flings. Scenes will contain implied nudity and sexual content. Production is also hiring two crew roles: a director of photography and a sound operator. Auditions will begin virtually on May 19, followed by final auditions during the week of June 6. Filming is scheduled for June 15–Aug. 1 in Charlottesville, Virginia. Pay is $100–$200 for the day player acting role, $500–$1,000 for the sound operator, and $2,000–$3,000 for the DP.
