The nominees for the 23rd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were presented this morning as we enter the final (and most exciting!) leg of the awards race. Announced by Sophia Bush and Common at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood, the nominated performers represent the best work on the big and small screens in the calendar year of 2016, as voted upon by SAG members across the country.

This year’s nominated film ensembles—the SAG Awards’ equivalent of the Best Picture Oscar—are “Captain Fantastic” (Bleecker Street), “Fences” (Paramount Pictures), “Hidden Figures” (20th Century Fox), “Manchester by the Sea” (Roadside Attractions and Amazon Studios), “Moonlight” (A24). Several actors from those five were included in individual acting categories as well, along with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling in “La La Land” (Lionsgate), Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant in “Florence Foster Jenkins” (Paramount Pictures), and Nicole Kidman and Dev Patel in “Lion” (Weinstein Co.). Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester” came away with top honors, earning nominations for stars Casey Affleck, Michelle Williams, and Lucas Hedges.
The TV nominees represented a particularly strong year for scripted content across cable and streaming networks. Earning three nods apiece were Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and “The Crown,” HBO’s “Westworld,” and FX’s “People v. O.J.: American Crime Story.” Sterling K. Brown, who won an Emmy earlier this year for the latter, has the distinction of being nominated in two SAG categories, for “People v. O.J.” and for NBC’s new hit drama “This Is Us.” Netting the most nominations by far was Netflix with 17, including recognition for “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” “Grace and Frankie,” “Orange Is the New Black,” and “House of Cards.”
As last year’s ceremony indicated, the award for best film ensemble tends to be a bellwether for the Oscar for best picture. Open Road Films’ “Spotlight,” and Fox Searchlight Pictures’ “Birdman” the year before, were recognized for their ensemble work. Of the 21 winners for the Best Film Ensemble SAG Award, 11 have gone on to win the industry’s top prize. Which of the 2017 nominees do you think could do the same?
