Fresh off their collaboration on another depiction of recent American history (the Gulf of Mexico oil spill in “Deepwater Horizon”), Mark Wahlberg has teamed up with writer-director Peter Berg for the season’s newest contender. “Patriots Day,” the big-screen adaptation of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and its aftermath, looks to be an unflinching, painful, and ultimately inspiring depiction of heroism in the face of terror. As the trailer below suggests, it’s also a film positioned well for awards.

As Tommy Saunders, the police sergeant who joined first responders and investigators in pursuing the perpetrators of the attacks, Wahlberg capably steps into the role of dramatic leading man. Co-starring with Michelle Monaghan, John Goodman, Kevin Bacon, J.K. Simmons, and several other talented actors, he could turn the real-life story of “Patriots Day” into a second Academy Award nomination (after his work in “The Departed”). Counting the charismatic Wahlberg out of the race would be foolish.
