Happy May. This is the month of retrogrades: Saturn, Venus, and Jupiter all do the cosmic backstroke within three days (May 11 to May 14), joining Pluto who went retrograde in late April. Mars, the planet of action, moves into diffuse and dreamy Pisces during the same period. All of this points to a slower pace in May. You might be saying, “I haven’t been out of my house in seven weeks, how could my life possibly get any slower?” I hear you, but while we’ve been forced to reevaluate our culture of busyness, this time hasn’t exactly been chill. We’ve had to absorb radical disruption on a personal and systemic level. May is the time to address the old wounds this crisis has brought up, integrate the new lessons, and reassess where we stand.

If you’re beating yourself up for not being productive, you’re treating the symptom when you need to be fighting the disease. Motivation is rooted in values, not putting on a pair of pants and acting like things are normal. The Venus retrograde from May 13 to June 25 offers an opportunity to worry less about the how and get back in touch with the why. Why does being an artist matter? Why did you choose this path in the first place? At the start of the month, write down three values that light you up (you can find several lists of them online) and put your paper in a place where you’ll see it every day. Check back in periodically and see if the words you chose still resonate with you. Listen to your intuition and be open to revisions. If there’s been a silver lining to this crisis, it’s the crystallization of what really matters.

Remember, read your rising sign before your sun sign!

JUMP TO

Taurus (April 20–May 20)

For the next few months, focus on the innovative ways you can create stability for yourself and your community. Don’t get hung up on whether what you can offer is enough. It might be a wild departure from what you thought you could do, but if it’s authentic, it’s enough. The last two years have brought lessons in just how infinite your resources really are. Creativity is a resource. Friendships are a resource. The more you accept these new-found gifts, the greater your sense of belonging will be. Tap your network when you feel depleted. When you ask for help, you’re giving people the opportunity to feel needed. It’s a positive feedback loop and one of the most powerful tools at your disposal right now.

Gemini (May 21–June 20)

This is the summer of love–self-love, that is. The next few months are about asking yourself: who am I when I’m not busy? Being an artist is a blessing and a curse. There’s nothing more liberating than doing what you love, but when so much of your identity is tied up in your work, it can be scary when you don’t have anything on the horizon. Dry spells happen in every career and just because you’re not acting right now doesn’t mean you’re not an actor. Take this time to get in touch with the other parts of your identity. Find new paths to creative self-expression. Throw yourself into learning and mastering something esoteric. Think of it as investment rather than indulgence: a deeper understanding of who you are will only make you a better artist.

Cancer (June 21–July 22)

Having your own space to work things out, get messy, and create is crucial for the next few months. If all you have is a kitchen table, take the time to make that table a sanctuary. Put a plant on the windowsill, find a picture that makes you smile and tack it up on the wall. What if you thought of this time as a creative retreat instead of a forced isolation? You’re growing and deepening your understanding of your emotions, and this process requires time and attention. When you investigate the root of your self-destructive tendencies, it makes it easier to cut them off at the knees. Sitting with your hard feelings–even if it’s for a minute longer than you normally would–makes you more present for other people when things really hit the fan.

Leo (July 23–Aug. 22)

The next few months might bring up some frustrations with your friend group or professional network. Whether you’re forced to take on a lot of emotional labor, or you have a heavy load of your own that your friends can’t shoulder, it’s a moment that makes you reevaluate the people you spend your time with. Listen to your intuition, but don’t be too hasty about assuming anyone else’s motives. As an actor, it’s easy to play both sides of an imaginary conversation and think you know what the other person will say or do, but ultimately, you can’t play someone else’s hand for them. Start by admitting your vulnerability and you might be surprised by how far it gets you. By the end of the summer, your relationships and your networking skills will be stronger than ever.

Virgo (Aug. 23–Sept. 21)

As a Virgo you’re no stranger to hard work, but sometimes you lose the forest for the trees. For the next few months, you have the opportunity to ask yourself some hard questions: is what you’re achieving in your career in line with your values? Are you working to achieve something great or are you just keeping busy? It’s OK for feelings to change and priorities to shift, especially in a crisis. Make sure you’re checking in with yourself instead of just powering through. You can take a step back and still be ambitious. Strategy is just as important as action. Use the people you trust the most as a sounding board, but don’t let their opinions about your career overwrite your own. Only you can know when something needs to shift.

Libra (Sept. 22–Oct. 22)

The start of May might have you feeling disillusioned and hopeless. You’ve been working hard at your craft, but your motivation to put in the hours is less reliable this month. Don’t lose hope just because you’ve lost the thread. Productivity is not just about buckling down and tackling your to-do list, it’s also zooming out to see the big picture. Figure out what tools get you outside of your anxious thoughts. Once you clear the chatter of what you “should” be doing, you can hear your intuition about the direction you want your life to take. If you’ve been meaning to try a meditation or gratitude practice, now is the time to do it. It might not look like “working” but by the end of the summer, your goals will be so clear that you’ll be unstoppable.

Scorpio (Oct. 23–Nov. 21)

Creative expression is a coping mechanism for you, and when your traditional outlets are taken away, it can feel like a backlog of emotional turmoil is waiting in the wings. Just like a beach ball that you try to force underwater, your feelings will surface eventually. This month is about finding ways to release. Try taking a dance class on Instagram. Write poetry. Going outside of your preferred medium can circumvent the mental pathways that associate your art with work, and allow you to go deeper. Here’s your first creative prompt: give a name or a visual representation to the parts of your personality you feel are unlovable. Then take a step back and ask yourself whether they’re really as grotesque as you think.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22–Dec. 21)

For the next few months, you’ll be going through a relationship audit. It might be tempting to dismiss the people who bring up heavy feelings for you, but this is the time to try going deeper. Take inventory of the behaviors and emotions in other people that make you want to run. Where does that response come from, and what does it say about your own emotional processing? Are you bringing the same empathy and integrity to your relationships that you do to your career? Try having an honest conversation with your partner or best friend or collaborator about these questions. By the end of the summer, you’ll have a new understanding not just of your partner, but of your partner’s perspective on you.

Capricorn (Dec. 22–Jan. 19)

Be kind to yourself, Cap. This month might find you overly fixated on your health and work, but lacking the time or motivation to stick to a routine. Our lives have all been radically disrupted and that can lead to a rush to fill the void one way or another. It’s not necessarily a bad thing to try to feel like you have some sense of control amidst the chaos. The key is being aware of it. Intentionally or otherwise you’re building habits right now, so make sure they’re ones you want to keep. Stressing about what you’re eating is just as bad for your immune system as junk food. Being busy is not a status symbol and self-care is not self-indulgent. Making time for the rituals that keep you grounded can help you work smarter, not harder.

Aquarius (Jan. 20–Feb. 18)

It might feel like you’ve witnessed so much suffering and felt so many disappointments in the last seven weeks that it’s no longer safe to want things. For the next few months rekindle your sense of desire, even if what you want isn’t possible under quarantine, even if it’s completely outlandish. Let go of the impulse to question whether you’re worthy. Cultivate an attitude of abundance by tapping into your creativity. Making art comes from a desire to better understand the chaos of our world, and it’s a skill set we desperately need right now. The next time you disqualify yourself at the starting line, ask yourself “why not me?”

Pisces (Feb. 19–March 20)

Even if you love your family and had a great upbringing, there’s a wounded child in all of us. According to Brené Brown, all the times we felt unlovable as a child (even in small ways) were processed as a threat to survival. That’s why we hold onto those feelings well into our adult years. The next few months are about reevaluating your roots and the ways they influence your present relationship dynamics. What do you value in other people and where does your attraction (or resistance) come from? How are you repeating patterns that kept you safe in the past but might not be necessary with your friends, partners, and loved ones? The person you become when you’re in a relationship might not be your highest self, but by the end of the summer they’ll be much more aligned.

Aries (March 21–April 19)

You’re becoming more aware of your communication tactics and the next few months will intensify your desire to say precisely what you mean. Pay attention to the words and phrases that grab you. Even if you don’t have auditions at the moment, this is a good time to commit something meaningful to memory or start that writing project you’ve been kicking around. Yes, it’s scary, especially these days when there isn’t much to distract you from the glare of the blank page. The best way to battle imposter syndrome, procrastination, and self-sabotage? Rituals. Train your brain to make the connection that when you light that candle or make that tea, it’s time to work. Even if the work is “bad.” Start small and by the end of August, you’ll be amazed by where you end up.
