New York is the city that never sleeps, and with so many events and activities each week across all five boroughs, it can be hard to know what’s actually worthwhile. Here are the events New York City actors should have on their radars this week.
You can sit with them.
Broadway’s “Mean Girls” will release its cast recording on vinyl and you’re invited to celebrate the fetch achievement. On Aug. 28 beginning at 2 p.m., head to the Urban Outfitters in Herald Square to purchase the record; the first 200 customers will be eligible for an exclusive signing with cast members of the hit musical, as well as members of its creative team, which includes Tina Fey. (The event is free though purchase of the record is required)
Put your paddle where your mouth is.
Speaking of Broadway’s “Mean Girls,” members of that cast, including Ashley Park and Kerry Butler, have signed on to partake in “Celebrity Paddle Battle,” a benefit event to support the Actors Fund. Tickets for the evening, taking place Aug. 27 at SPiN New York, include an open bar and the chance to take on stars of stage and screen ping-pong court. Other participants include Wesley Taylor, Laura Osnes, Alex Price, and others. ($100)
Ride the Blue Wave.
Stars including Edie Falco, MJ Rodriguez, Laura Benanti, and New York State gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon will take part in Broadway Blue Wave for New York. The Aug. 26 event, held at Merkin Hall on the Upper West Side, will feature songs and speeches, and invites for New Yorkers to resist the Trump Administration while simultaneously raising awareness for the Sept. 13 primaries. Fellow stars lined up for the fundraiser, which will benefit Nixon and No IDC NY, include “Hamilton” star Javier Muñoz, “Orange Is the New Black” stars Taylor Schilling and Annie Golden, and original “Rent” star Daphne Rubin-Vega. (Tickets start at $25)
Find your people at TheatreFest.
If you’re a student and in New York Aug. 28, you won’t want to miss TheatreFest NYC 2018. The free event, hosted by Signature Theatre, will provide information about New York’s non-profit theaters, as well as affordable ticket programs, internship insight, and opportunities to win free theater tickets. Participating organizations this year including The Public Theater, Roundabout Theatre Company, MCC Theater, New York Theatre Workshop, the Vineyard Theatre, and many more. (Free)
Commemorate 100 years of Lerner.
Head to the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts for “We Remember Him Well: The Songs of Alan Jay Lerner,” a special concert presentation celebrating what would be the lyricist’s 100th birthday. Along with his frequent collaborator Frederick Loewe, Lerner penned classics “My Fair Lady,” “Camelot,” and a number of others, selections from which will be performed at the Aug. 27 presentation. The cast is being kept under wraps, however, boasts “faces fresh and familiar.” (Free)
