Hollywood’s major guilds are ready to announce their picks for the year’s top filmmakers in their respective fields. Announced Jan. 4 were the Writers Guild Award film nominees, honoring the screenwriters of both features and documentaries in the 2017 calendar year.

Nominated in the prestigious Original Screenplay category are “The Big Sick,” “Get Out,” “I, Tonya,” “Lady Bird,” and “The Shape of Water,” all of which have been picking up steam this awards season. The writers behind the adapted screenplays of “Call Me by Your Name,” “The Disaster Artist,” “Logan,” “Molly’s Game,” and “Mudbound” also scored with WGA.

Announced Dec. 7, the WGA television honorees include a wide variety of shows, particularly freshman series. FX’s “The Americans,” AMC’s “Better Call Saul,” HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale,” and Netflix’s “Stranger Things” were recognized for drama; HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Silicon Valley,” and “Veep,” and Netflix’s “GLOW” and “Master of None,” make up the comedy nominations. The Long Form Original nominees are the writers of FX’s “American Horror Story: Cult” and “Feud: Bette and Joan,” Lifetime’s “Flint,” Netflix’s “Godless,” and Discovery Channel’s “Manhunt: Unabomber”; Long Form Adapted nominees include HBO’s “Big Little Lies,” FX’s “Fargo,” and HBO’s “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” and “The Wizard of Lies.” To be eligible, all TV contenders for WGA must have aired between Dec. 1, 2016 and Nov. 30, 2017.

Last year at the bi-coastal WGA ceremonies, Barry Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney of “Moonlight” took home the original screenplay prize; at the subsequent Academy Awards they won for adapted screenplay.

Comprised of film, TV, radio, and new media writers, the Writers Guild of America has both an east and west coast branch, which together cast nominations and votes for the WGA Awards. This year’s crowning of the winners, the 70th annual ceremonies, will occur Feb. 11. Check out the full list of this year’s WGA Award nominees here.
